Signature Design II

19 November 2024

After return to Melbourne, I started building Poppy & Pepper but never stopped thinking about this collection. I wanted a signature Poppy & Pepper design that is contemporary Australian reminisces Chinoiserie style.

Searching for an Australian illustrator who shares the same value and aesthetics with Poppy & Pepper is the Immediate goal. When I found Rachel at Australian Illustrators, I knew at once I didn’t want to look further, she is the one. Rachel took a leap of faith in my vision and sharing the same passion about building something uniquely beautiful and different together.

Compliment to Rachel’s illustrations, I selected three traditional patterns, – understated but iconically Chinese. This process also established Poppy & Pepper’s initiative of collaborating with Australian artists and designers.

The journey just started. Rachel and I focused on telling a story through our birds, flowers, and cute little insects. Rachel understood the design concept so well and brought love and realism into her illustrations. Made up my mind to build a dinnerware collection, our Australian birds & flowers illustrations became the spotlight on each piece.

Following Rachel’s work, my potters in Jingdezhen took on the rest. Execution is key no matter how brilliant a design is. Their incredible energy determined to bring our designs to life. My ceramic maker Jay and I had countless discussions on how to tackle each challenge without compromising the design. We developed the glaze from scratch, Jay hand glazed most of the wares himself, and our artisans transferred pattern and illustrations and fired two rounds. I am extremely proud of our work, and it made me so happy to share this collection with the world.

A contemporary take on classic Chinese design, with an Australian twist.
