A contemporary take on classic Chinese design, with an Australian twist.
Inspired by a pair of teacups and saucers from the 1930s
Our inspiration came from the traditional ‘Harmony Cup,’ where the collection highlights the defining inward-tilting edge of this classic tea vessel. The elevated foot adds an additional touch of elegance.
Poppy & Pepper collaborated with Australian artist Rachel Gyan to reimagine elegant Chinese motifs featuring flora and fauna. The resulting illustrations showcase iconic Australian birds, flowers, and insects, all adorned with a selection of traditional patterns.
Vibrant yet Elegant
We crafted a glaze in an eggshell colour with subtle speckles that echo the collection’s harmonious essence, featuring a semi-matte finish for a touch of softness.
Poppy & Pepper adores Rachel’s vibrant and intricate illustrations. Birds are elegantly portrayed in classic resting poses on graceful flower branches, and we frame these scenes within a spherical or semi-spherical ‘window,’ paying homage to iconic Chinese design.
Finally, we chose three classic patterns with a shared diagonal form to complete the design. These patterns were deliberately recreated hairline-thin, barely visible against the warm glaze. Porcelain blue cloud is one of the oldest patterns from the Chinese Neo-Ethiopic era; imperial yellow Buddhism pattern holds significant cultural and religious value in China; turquoise chainmail pattern originated from medieval European armour, carried to the east, and found its way as a staple pattern in traditional Chinese motifs.
All patterns and illustrations are screen-printed in high-quality transfers, consisting of 10 – 23 colours per illustration, bringing our beloved birds and flowers to life.
