Craftsmanship process

We started by digitally designing and 3D sculpting the larger patterns, then hand-carving intricate textures for added detail. We used a glaze-on-glaze technique: first, dipping the dishes into a glaze bucket, then carefully applying additional glaze along the edges with a fine brush. This allows the glaze to flow naturally, creating beautiful trails of pale beige tones. The platters are slip-cast, with each mould weighing around 80kg! Our Neo Fish Platter is handmade in small batches. We apply a splattering glaze technique to create water splatters on the surface, then spray glaze around and inside it. Finally, we gas-fired the stoneware, often repeating the process to perfect the glaze colour.

Design

The design of these wares is inspired by ancient pottery discovered at the Sanxingdui archaeological site in Sichuan, China. The patterns draw from Neolithic-era pottery remnants, reflecting the rich cultural history of ancient China. The colour palette is inspired by the red earth of the Australian Outback, bringing a unique natural tone to each piece.

IMPORTANT

We photographed our Neo ceramic collection outdoors, capturing the natural sunlight and the beauty of vibrant gum trees. In post-production, we made precise adjustments to ensure the colours were accurately represented, reflecting the true essence of each piece.

Our Burnt Sienna glaze features a rich colour spectrum, transitioning from a soft, creamy beige with delicate crazing to a deep, textured brick-red. The glaze’s flow across each piece creates a range of tones, making each item unique.

The glaze naturally settles into the hand-carved patterns and textures, highlighting the intricate details and enhancing the visual appeal of every piece, adding a distinctive touch to the surface.

Every ceramic piece in our collection is 100% handmade and hand-glazed, ensuring that no two items are identical. The way the glaze interacts with the textures and designs varies, showcasing the individual craftsmanship involved. These natural variations in appearance emphasize the artistry behind each creation and contribute to the unique charm of our Poppy & Poppy ceramics.

Dishwasher and microwave safe with proper care. To prevent scratches on the glaze, ensure that items do not touch each other while in the dishwasher.

To avoid thermal shock and protect your ceramics, refrain from subjecting them to sudden temperature changes, such as moving from hot to cold surfaces or from the freezer to the oven. Always place cold dishes on a wire rack in the oven, and hot dishes on a cloth or wooden surface to maintain their integrity.
